Default J-1 and J-2 visa "legal spouse"

Hi, i'll be going to the US for a couple of years to take up a research position at a university. I've been told that i'll be on a J-1 visa. Looking through the information i can see that my legal spouse would be able to join me either immaediately or at a later date on a J-2.

The thing is that i am not yet married to my girlfriend. Would it be possible for us to apply for a J-2 after i have been in the US for some time, we are planning on getting married 5 months after i am due to take up my position? or is it neccessary that, to get a J-2 visa, we must be married BEFORE i get my visa and that my original application and hers must go in at the same time?

You can go on the J-1 immediately. However, in order for her to get a
J-2 she must be married to you at the time the J-2 application is
submitted.

So... there are two major possibilities:
(1) You spend five months apart.
(2) You have a quickie register-office wedding to make it all legal
now, and do all the fancy stuff in five months' time.

Completely up to you which option you pick...
