ITN number and being self employed

Hi was wondered if anyone can help !!!

I am living in the USA on an L2 visa and have an ITN number only. When eventually working I will be self employed and I am not sure if an ITN number is sufficient or will I have to apply for an SSN (social security number). Have looked at IRS website but I am unclear of the requirements. Any advice appreciated ?

You should apply for a SSN, that is the correct way to do it. Although an ITIN is indistinguishable to most people and businesses (or at least they aren't going to bother to try, because there are ways to check if you've been given a SSN or an ITIN), the IRS does know and it will mess up your social security records because there will be no social security payments or Medicare benefits paid against ITIN accounts, and you may be actually be paying into someone else's because ITINs and SSN's do overlap.
