IR-1 activation via ship/port entry?
So once our visa is complete (currently in progress in London) we were thinking about taking a ship from Southampton to New York.
From what I can find technically you are able to activate your visa at any port of entry, be it land, sea, or airport. However there is some vague warning that if the port of entry is too obscure that it might cause problems (or they might simply be unable to unprocess you).
Has anyone tried to activate their visa via a port from ship entry? Did it cause any problems? And if you did can you tell me which port you arrived at?
PS - If you think this is a bad plan, please say so. I am interested in general feedback too.
Thanks

Quite a few members have taken a ship to the US with their visa and have had no problems at the POE.
Where were you planning on disembarking? A small island off of South Carolina perhaps?

Quite a few BE people have sailed US to UK on the QM2. It was mostly people with dogs...but they all enjoyed the journey. A few threads in The Moving Back To The UK Forum about it. It also has the added advantage of no luggage restrictions...handy if you are not flying once you arrive in NYC.

Nothing "technical" about it - what you're doing is deactivating your visa and activating PR status.

Sounds like a wonderful way to enter the US. The QM2 wouldn't dock at a small and obscure port so you'll be fine doing this.
If you planned to row over, or be on a small vessel going to a random port then that's when you might encounter a little more issue.
