Question IP address

Hi there
When we emigrate to the US we are taking our iMac. Will the ip address change automatically or can I prevent that happening?

Sometimes you just scratch your head.

Yes, your IP address will be assigned by your new service provider.

The IP will change... you can't stop it. The question that people will want to know, however... is why it matters to you whether or not your IP address changes?

The ISP provides the IP.

If you're talking about trying to keep a UK IP for iPlayer type purposes, then VPN will be what you want to look into.

I suspected as much but thanks for the info. Yes, it was for access to iPlayer etc. but I'm sure there are solutions to that somewhere in here.
Thanks again :-)

Your ip address is likely changing even when you are in the UK. Most ISP's don't offer fixed ip addresses unless you pay a lot of money for it since they don't want you to be a server with a .com name and eat up the bandwidth. So they they use dynamic ip addresses which generally expire weekly and you could possibly get the same one or a new one.

I believe if you keep your system on 24 hours per day connected to the internet, that is the only time you will be guaranteed the same ip address.
