International moving from UK to USA
Hi mods,
sorry if this is in the wrong place? Anyone give us some advice on companies that deliver from door to door internationally with prices. If I had a pallet 2 meters high by say 1.5 width and depth how much roughly would this cost from a pick up in Gloucestershire to Missouri USA? Obviously rough quotes of price. But it will give me a idea what to expect.. any thoughts? the boxes are full of books,cd's,kitchen,tv, ect... general household... many thanks EDIT.. sorry I see there is a place on here about moving..plz feel freely to move..thx |

Moving small quantities is relatively expensive, because a lot of the cost is in the pick up and delivery. If you send it "surface" (shared container), I'd guess about £800-£1,000, airfreight probably three times that.

The cheapest quote I got was £890 for 84 cu ft.

Unless your tv is actually a confirmed multiregional flatscreen in terms of power requirements, which it may be, I don't know. Leave it or sell it.

lol @ Hotscot...It isnt but have decided to sell alot of stuff..who needs a tin opener ..lol thx Pulaski and Bunny girl. to be honest I thought it would be alot more than this for 2 pallets!! I was thinking of around 3,000... If it was mainly kitchen,tv's tables ect I would leave it... But its my music books and hundreds of music teaching dvd's..Very special to me as it took me yrs to collect... Does anyone have a actual final total bill for 1 pallet or more. And the company they used..many thx ps....I have read many reports across the internet on quotes but when it came to the final bill it was extremely alot higher! any thoughts? |

I've gone with Excess International, can't comment on service yet as they collect in 2 weeks but I'm happy with them so far. I had 3 companies out to quote and they all estimated 84-86 cu ft so I'm pretty sure that's accurate. I'm mainly shipping books, dvds and toys.
I have also been trying to work out your 84 cu ft... dont laugh but would that mean say a good tall fridge freezer?? as google images bring up large freezers... But to me surely a 84 sq cu would be bigger than a tall fridge... lol need a maths person on here lol....not used to cu ft myself..:eek: thx for the name of company ps...I guessed about Pallet sizes in meters but not quite sure what are the standard sizes edit...been doing some maths...I think a average sized box by 24 by 18 inches gives around 4.5 cubic ft..I think |

A standard international "metric" pallet (the ubiquitous blue GKN-CHEP ones) is 4'x3'3¾" (1.22m x 1.00m), so a 6' stack on a pallet would be 79.5ft³.
Don't get too hung up on stacking a pallet though unless you have a forklift or access to a pallet truck and a loading dock because whoever you ship with is not going to be able to load a pallet without one or the other, so the boxes will be loose loaded into the van that is sent to collect them. A typical American double door "tall" fridge is 3' wide, 5'8" tall, and 2'6" deep, making an external volume of 42½ft³, the interior (usable) volume of modern American fridges is about 26½ft³. |

Hopefully I can help with the maths :) 2 pallets at that size would be around 150 cubic feet. BUT, like Pulaski says international shippers don't really use pallets, but I guess this gives you a way to visualize it. Our medium boxes are 4 cubic feet (they also come in large at 6cubic feet and small for books etc at 2 cubic feet).
It's really hard to give a decent idea of price because every single quote and move is different. Here's a post we wrote on how international removals costs are made up so you can see why. That being said, for budgeting purposes you're probably looking at a ball park of around £1350+vat for a 150cubic feet volume if all the variables are standard. The best way to get a more accurate budget is to arrange home visits from 3 international removal companies who will assess the volume and all the other details in that blog post. This visit and quote should always be free and no obligation. Failing that some moving companies have online self survey forms on their website's where you can enter a list of things you're thinking of taking and get a price for that. Regarding the final bill being higher than the quote, this is typically only happens if something changes from the scope of your quote. I.e. you add something to your shipment that you've not mentioned previously so ship more volume, if you don't tell them something about access to your new property that causes a problem, or if there are external charges that weren't included in your quote (for example customs duties). When you compare quotes always make sure to understand what is included and excluded, what possible additionals there might be and if you do go over volume, what additional charges might be applied. it does really help much appreciated.. this all assuming I get to Usa.. Currently in Ireland with my USC Wife... But have decided to try to live in Usa but was concerned about all our belongings here in Ireland and UK... now going to post a new question in another thread how to get there..lol cheers guys |
