Hi there,
I'm moving to New Mexico from the UK in 2 weeks time. I hold a UK driving license,
I'm 22 year olds and I've had a UK driving license for over 4 years. When I'm in the
US I will be hiring a car and, at a later date, buying a car. Can anyone tell me if I
require an international driving license and / or whether or not I will need to sit
any tests, etc. in the US?
Thanks very much in advance for any information.
- Best regards,
Lee Reilly

If you cannot find the info in the above, email them.
Generally your licence is only valid for a very short time if you are seeking
permanent residency. [My licence was only valid for 10 days in CA and an
international driver's licence was of no use].
I don't know about NM but some States require proof of residency plus you are
required to undergo a full test. You may be able to sit the theory but not undertake
the road test until you have obtained your social security number.
If you currently have vehicle insurance, before you leave, obtain a letter from your
insurers; also if your authority has drivers licence records, obtain a copy.
If you cannot use your licence/are waiting for your NM licence, *don't* drive - it's
not worth the risk of becoming involved in an accident.
