Hello alltogether again,

on June 11 I had my interview in Frankfurt and one week later I got my K-1 visa! My
fiancee and I are very happy.

Thank you all for your help, especially the useful sites of A. and J., without you
things wouldnt went so smoothly and I am glad to see those sites back.

Now I am preparing for leaving and I wondered, what to do about the driving license.
I know that a german tourist is allowed to drive in the USA with his german driving
licence although an international driving license is suggested (of course because not
every police officer is able to figure out what is standing in the german ones).
Looking onto the Ohio motor vehicle laws one can read:

Motorists who are residents of other nations and who are bona fide tourists visiting
the United states may drive up to one year with their own national license plates on
their cars and with their own personal driver license.

(I know, I am not a tourist...)

On the other side there is also standing: New residents have to get a driving license
within 30 days.

Now I am confused, will I be a resident after the AOS got improved or will I be one
immediately (concerning Ohio motor vehicle laws)? Am I allowed to drive with the
german driving license and how long? And if not, am I allowed to make the test then
or have I to wait till the AOS?

I know that is a K1-news-group and not a driving law news group and that question
will sure vary from state to state but any help I would gladly appreciate, thanks.

Get your license within the 30 days. There is no reason to put this off. Since you will be living in Ohio from the day you set foot here, then you are a new resident, regardless of the visa you come in on. The DMV is not the INS, so they don't get the nuances in visa law, tbh.

Other good reasons to get your license straightaway:

- you probably won't be working for at least a few weeks, so you can do something useful in this time.

- think of your drivers license as a License to Live, rather than a license to drive. It's hard to get by without one, as it's the standard ID, and you basically need it to write cheques, buy alcohol etc.

- don't let Ohio bad habits set in. The longer you live here, the worse your driving will get.

- the test is easy peasy. It's basically a 'Stop Sign Test'.
