Dear news group My fiancee has a Russian drivers license, and an international
license. Can she use one of them in the States while we get our life together ? I live in Ohio but will pick her up at JFK, at which time we are going on a road trip and I wanted to let her do some of the driving. thanks Mike |
Mike,
You may want to check with your insurance company and see if your coverage is valid with her driving given the conditions you stated. (Assuming it is even legal to use Russian/International driving licensees in the states you will be driving in.) Pete > > Can > in > trip > |
An international driver's permit is basically a translation of the foreign license. It's not a stand-alone document, but useful to carry should you come across a policeman who can't read Russian.
When she arrives in Ohio, she has 30 days to get an Ohio license. It's a two-part test - first the written portion which she can do walk-in to the test centre. When she passes this test, she will schedule the road test for a few days later. If she fails the written test, she can take it again at least 24 hours later; if she fails the driving test, she'll have to wait a week to repeat it. The road test is basically a turn-into-the-correct-lane and stop-sign test. She can get a heads-up on the written portion by studying for it online (or you can get a manual for her from your local DMV testing centre), and then take the test within a few days of arriving - there's nothing to be gained by putting this off. http://www.state.oh.us/odps/division/bmv/mvdigest.html http://www.state.oh.us/odps/division/bmv/ol_info.html |
As a more practical matter.... How long has she been driving? Having a licence from
Russia means nothing with regard to driving ablility. My fiance attended a driver's ed program in Russia prior to coming here, but did not own a car. I found it amazing that no one was maimed in her town while she was learning, when I got a dose of her actually behind the wheel for the first time. Does your fiance actually have driving experience?
