An interesting transport problem.
So, I decided to relocate from Northamptonshire to the Bay Area, and while planning for it, visited the Bay Area and, ah, accidentally ended up living here. With all my stuff in Northants. The plan was always to go back before my lease expired on 5 April, but a combination of crappy timing and weird payroll schedules at my company means that looks...awkward. Potentially doable, but awkward.
So, two questions. The first; what moving companies can people recommend for UK to US shipping of books and the like? The second: can anyone recommend any companies of the "turn up at my house, grab everything not tied down and stick it in boxes" variety for the situation in which I can't afford to travel back and handle it myself?

Sounds kinda shady!
But assuming it is not, do you have any friends and family that could help pack it up for you?

Heh; it's not. The only local person is my housemate, and I'm loathe to ask too much of him (ye olde Jewish guilt). It's totally the backup plan, though, but the backup backup backup plan.

So, am I correct in assuming that you are a US citizen?

It would help if the OP came back to the thread...
Sheesh, you can't have any fun if they run away too early!

Any removals firm that will go site/person unseen, open the gaff, pack, load, transport it.....will be very shifty.
They will want you to sign all kinds of stuff and to make sure you can pay them.
Stuff like books, box them up and ship them in the snail mail or a crate and pack service and use your mate to do it.

So the OP disappears off the face of the earth and the flatmate packs his stuff up and ships it to the US. .... That could lead to an interesting conversation with the local constabulary if anyone in the UK were to report the OP "missing".

And I was thinking, if you can afford a moving company to do all that, you can probably afford to travel back and handle it yourself...no?

My guess is that you lot have scared him off! I'm sure he doesn't even realize that if he's here illegally, the administrators already have a record of his IP address and could, if they really wanted to, have him tracked down and deported!!!
