Default Insurance on car for two week visit to the UK

I'm visiting family in the UK soon for a couple of weeks. My mum tried to put me temporarily on her car insurance but they wouldn't do it because I don't live there. She called round three other companies but no joy. I also no longer have a full driving licence since it expired a few months ago - I imagine that isn't helping matters.

Any ideas where we could find an insurer who'll cover me for two weeks fully comp?

I'll bring back Marmite and/or the Beano for person with the most useful reply...

I'll ask my Mum tomorrow as she has done it for me on her insurance. It limits you to I think 2 wks a year. I think she uses Norwich Union but I may be wrong. I've started hiring a car when we go back to give us more flexibility.

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has figured out a cheap way to do this for future reference though!

Doesn't cover those with US licenses:
UK, EU, EEA, Australian and NZ licence holders covered
and my UK license is not currently valid as I am not a UK resident.

I'd love to be able to find a solution so I can drive one of my parent's cars when I am home at Christmas. Couldn't find anything last year, Google was not my friend.

Last time I tried this, it was cheaper for me to rent a car than to be put on my Dad's insurance.

I am returning to the UK for vacation for the first time. Does anyone know legally which license I should use if I get insured on my parents car - UK or US license? my UK license is registered (for want of a better description) to my parents address.

As I understand it, your US license. Your UK license is technically not currently valid as you are not a UK resident (although if/when you return to the UK you will be able to renew it without having to take your test again).

Please let us know what insurance you manage to get, I want to do the same thing but have not been successful in the past. As soon as the company hears my address is in the USA then the conversation swiftly draws to a close with a "very sorry, we are unable to help you".

I spoke to my Mum about this and apparently she did it when I first moved over utilizing my UK license (saying I was temporarily placed in the US), so my apologies! She says she enquired about it since using a foriegn license and they wouldn't cover it.

I haven't got any further with this - everyone I tried says no. I think I'll rent a car for a couple of days, just to give my mum a break from driving us around. Bit frustrating...

I tried and ended up doing the exact same thing. Cheaper for me to rent with insurance as a 'foreigner' than try to get insurance on someone else's car.

Same here - I had to go for a quick trip to the UK and had an offer from a mate to borrow one of his vehicles, but without a current UK license and more importantly, without currently residing in the EU, it proved impossible to get insurance. So a cheap-ish rental car it was.

And how do you propose to rent a car without any kind of valid license?
