Insurance for Brits in DC
Have re-located since my last post; now living in Chevy Chase DC and attempting to buy a car.
Question is: can anyone recommend a good insurer who will take into account non-US driving history? I had over 7rs NCD in UK, but nearly fell over when I was quoted over $2,000/year to insure a rather dull minivan. Many thanks |
Re: Insurance for Brits in DC
Hi there
Welcome to the forum! We moved to DC last year as well - and couldnt find anyone who would take into account our UK driving history ( 30 years!) We are also paying a ridiculous amount for our insurance as we also have a 20 year old who has been driving for 3 years on our policy. If you have any luck finding a decent quote, let me know! |
Re: Insurance for Brits in DC
Are you in DC proper or MD? Makes a difference.
Your lack of a credit rating plus DC proper high rates (for everyone) is likely hurting you. You could consider getting only the bare minimum insurance legally required or a very high deductible and just risk it. You should also consider getting car insurance from the same folks that insure your home. Sometimes there is a discount. And if you are renting a home consider renters insurance. |

Also there is a weekly newspaper in DC called the Washington Diplomat which is a local for embassy staff. There may be ads in there from people who deal with expats. You can find it at a few places in NW or spots like the World Bank bookstore.

Thanks Penguin six - I will look out for it. We actually live in Vienna, NoVa - and insure our car with Geico - its crippling!
