Go-Go Boots May Have Helped Pitcher Who Got Shot
Denney Shot In Calf

POSTED: 7:12 a.m. EDT September 30, 2004

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Indians front office wants to find out why one of its players got shot on the team bus Wednesday night in Kansas City.

Kyle Denney, 27, the winning pitcher in the game, was hospitalized after being shot in the leg while on the bus, NewsChannel5 reported.

The shooting happened while the team was headed to the Kansas City International Airport.

Police said the shot was fired into the side of the team's second bus while it was on a ramp between Interstate 435 and I-70.

Denney was shot in the calf and apparently the high, white go-go boots he was wearing helped him escape serious injury.

Due to the boot, the bullet did not go very deep and was immediately removed by Indians trainers.

The boots were part of a cheerleading outfit Denney was wearing as part of a team ritual for rookies on the final road trip.

"It embedded in his right calf. Our trainers took it out while we were traveling here to the airport. Kyle's fine. He never lost consciousness, he didn't lose a lot of blood," said Bart Swain, with Indians media relations.

The mood on the bus was jovial until Denney was shot.

"This is the trip, leg of trips where veteran players as part of initiation rights for major league players have younger players dress up in costumes before they get on the plane. Kyle Denney was actually wearing a costume -- a cheerleaders' outfit," Tribe Specialist Matt Underwood.

Denney was released from the hospital Thursday and is expected to join the Indians in Minnesota.

Kansas City police have received several phoned-in tips, but have no solid suspects in the shooting.
