Default Importing car from Canada to the US

Has anyone imported a car from Canada to the US? I'm relocating from Vancouver to Chicago and have a 2010 Mazda (only a few months old) and 2008 Ford. Will the warranties be valid in the US? Whats it going to cost to register them etc??

Don't really want to sell either, although that depends on how much moving them is going to cost vs cost to sell and repurchase in the US.

Have a read here, lots of folks who have done it.

Your visa type may be different than these mostly marriage-based ones.

quite a few threads here on the subject, good one from this summer though.

It all depends on if the car is sold in the US, the same spec not just the particular type...usually not worth it, but the brand new one is probably worth doing.

Warranty probably won't be worth poop though.

Yes... I did.

Your warranty will likely not be worth the paper it's written on. AFAIK, it's only valid in Canada. You can probably find the registration costs on the Illinois DMV web site but it's not going to cost you extra because you imported the car. What's going to cost is the Mazda... you'll likely need to pay duty on it since you've owned it less than a year. The Ford will be fine!

As for importing the cars... they will have to meet US safety and emissions standards for their model year and you'll need to be able to prove it. That likely means a call to Mazda and Ford in Canada and probably a letter from each of them - and that'll carry a nominal fee.
