Default Importation of Vehicle Questions

I am wondering if anyone knows how long it usually takes to receive a letter from the
manufacturer regarding if you vehicle meets US federal regulations and how long does it
take the EPA to fax the documents you need from them?

I have both faxed the manufacturer and faxed and phoned the EPA to request the documents a
week ago but maybe I am just impatient

How long does it usually take?

Thanks, Peter

I requested Ford to check to see if my car would be able to be imported to the US. They
sent me a Compliance letter about a week later to a local Ford Dealership for what they
say is "a small fee" can't remember exactly what the cost was. think it was about 55$.
thats all i needed to bring my car across the border and it now has a title and insurance
in the US. No problem. The letter will state whether it is compliant or not. If it
is..you shouldn't need anything else. C

last summer, i called diamler chrysler headquarters in canada to request this
information...i asked for the department that handled compliance...and was put in touch
with a man who took my VIN and faxed me a compliance letter within a couple of days. there
was no charge. it was extremely quick and easy. the letter was accepted at the border when
i arrived with my vehicle and K1 visa.

that was my experience...i don't think you should have to wait too long...but it might be
worth a phone call instead of doing the fax or mail thing...it's always nice and quicker
to talk to someone who can handle your request personally.

I called Chrysler Canada and all they gave me was a fax number to a person in the US that
handles their importation compliance letters. This is the individual I faxed but have not
had any response back.

What number did you call for Chrysler Canada? Maybe there is a different one than the one
I called or do you remember the department or persons name that you spoke to?

Thanks, Peter.

peter:

i just found the letter that i faxed to diamler chrysler in the US...and i faxed the front
side of my vehicle ownership/registration... (with VIN).

it was sent to:

Paul Cameron Diamler Chrysler US

fax: 248-512-8382

phone: 248-944-7062

i hope this helps you. i believe i called cameron first...but, in any case, i know i faxed
him the info and received a letter back by fax very quickly which verified the compliance
information. i sent him a cover letter which told him that i needed this letter from him
for immigration/importation of vehicle purposes.

you might try calling first, if this is another person...other than the one that chrysler
canada gave you.

good luck. the letter was accepted at the border without any problems.

I faxed my request directly to Chrysler in Michigan and I had a faxed copy back by the
next day of the letter that they snailmailed to me, which took about 10 days. I took my
Jeep across last Sun. night and all they needed was my ownership form, my driver's licence
(Can.), the original letter, and an estimated value (U.S.) of the vehicle on the custmons
declaration form that they gave to me. They then gave me a form that I will need to
present to the DMV in the US for registration of my vehicle here.

Unless they changed policies, Chrysler Canada will not do it. They referred us to Chrysler
US for all three Chrysler cars.

Thanks for all the information. I had faxed Paul Cameron on Jan 17,2001 with a cover
letter asking for both a faxed copy and a mailed copy of the letter I needed. I have not
heard anything through either means so I am beginning to wonder if he received it

Oh well, another fax to do on Monday

Thanks, Peter.

Default POE Questions

We imported a 2001 Hyundai in 2003 from Canada and had no trouble getting the letters that we needed from the manufacturer. However, when we got to the border in Sarnia, we ran into a bit of a problem.

When we went into the office the officer said that the car should have been changed to read in miles and because the kilometre reading was on top that it would be illegal in the US. How crazy is that?!?!?! Anyways, after much going back and forth, we told him that we would have it fixed ASAP and that we were never told that it had to be done before and so if he would let us through we promised to get it done.

Long story short, we got past the border but never got the speedometer and odometer converted. Later...husband wrecks car, flips car over twice, totals car. That's what you get for telling a lie to the border officer.

Food for thought.

Default Re: POE Questions

I recently found out that my 1994 Toyota Tercel doesn't meet the safety requirements to be imported... lovely. The only problem is it's lack of air bags, too, since that was made a US requirement in 1994 and not in Canada. It's not that big of a problem, since my husband can come pick me up with my stuff in Canada and we can go across together once I have the K3, but irritating nonetheless.

I'm debating whether to buy a used car here, or wait and buy one in the US once I'm there to replace it. If I'd need to replace the spedometer and everything anyway, I suppose I might as well just wait until I'm in the US. I'd also save a bit of money by not having to register it in both places and get license plates in Ontario and Indiana.. but that's not a huge problem either.

Does anyone know if I'd have to pay taxes on the car again upon importing it to the US if I've only owned it for a couple months prior? I guess that would be the easiest way to persuade me to just wait until I'm in the US
