Imo, the first thing to do is to enforce and strengthen the laws about employing illegal immigrants in order to diminish the incentive to come here illegally. Oddly - or perhaps not so oddly - the Republicans won't support this, because they know that many businesses rely on illegal labour in order to keep wage costs down.

The reality is that both parties are essentially hypocritical on illegal immigration: the Democrats because they want to preserve their Hispanic voting base, the Republicans because they have a core constituency of business owners who benefit from illegal workers.
