Weird. I have been to Italy maybe 20 times and almost every time I have been asked by German tourists if I am German. ...... But I concede that doesn't beat being mistaken for being a Pakistani in Pakistan by Pakistanis.

I'm a Hungarian citizen, but I was born here. When I travel, everyone asks me if I'm Canadian. I am still trying to figure out if that's a compliment, or whether they are painfully avoiding asking me if I'm from the US. lol

I was mistaken for being French in Paris by a couple of Spaniards.

They did say my English was very good so I forgave them.

In the US I have also been thought to be South African, Australian and one one occasion Finnish???

You have to admit it was a masterful piece of spittle-flecked trollery. I was impressed by the vitriol and imagery of the underlying metaphor....

Oh, that's a nice one.

I was picturing a hairy little creature though, so I won't say I'm not disappointed.
