Default Immigrant Visa timescale/deadline

I am a UK citizen, applying for a US Immigration visa via my US citizen wife. We both live in Uk at moment.

Once (if) we obtain the necessary visa, do I have to immigrate within a set timescale, before it expires (eg 6 months ??)

Yes, you need to arrive in the US within 6 months of receiving the visa.

What are you applying for? Are you doing a DCF? or K3? I've heard that this process
is very fast from England.
