Default Immigrant Health Insurance

http://www.immigrationhealth.com/plans.htm

Has any-one used any of the companies listed on this page for short term health insurance?

I am particularly interested in this option: https://www.sevencorners.com/insuran...igrant/HW7C6Y3

It seems to be reasonably priced, and just the kind of basic coverage that one needs when first arriving in the country.

Just prior to searching google for "Immigrant Health Insurance USA" I had never heard of any of them before.

Does any-one know of any other companies offering short term immigrant health insurance that are worth looking at?

Don't know...sounds like regular travel insurance to me though...lot of small print to trawl through.

I got a short-term plan from the following company. Sorted it all out over the phone from the UK, had email confirmations of everything being set up, set the start date for the day of travel, and paid by credit card. All sorted before flying which was nice as you can forget about it.

All the ones I have seen are somewhat limited in scope and more importantly very limited in sum insured.

Basically if you are otherwise healthy and nothing really nasty happens then it is better than nothing.

Limited benefits is all I need as its only until my work insurance kicks in, and really just for major emergencies rather than run of the mill stuff.

Thanks for the replies, that assurant health link looks interesting as well.

BritishGuy36, did you go for the temporary insurance?

I used seven corners for a few months (which I found from a thread on this forum) and it seemed alright - but then I never had to claim on it. Better than nothing at any rate.

It does not cover major emergencies, well it does but you would blow through the maximum pay out pretty quick.

The assurant health one provides up to 2 million dollars of coverage, so I would hope that would be enough.

Brief summary from what I understand for a quick quote for an average 35 year old:

Seven Corners

Low premiums $65 (or $95)
Maximum payout $50,000 (or $100,000)
Six month pre-existing exclusion
Deductible $75 (or $150)
Max coverage 5 years

Assurant

Higher premiums $240
Maximum $2,000,000
Five year pre-existing exclusion
Deductible $1,000
Max coverage 6 months

YMMV - a lot. As Boiler says, that Seven Corners maximum payout could be a problem if you have anything more than a broken toenail. Think car crash or anything requiring inpatient surgery. There's another thread running that has some sample costs of supposedly simple events that cost more than the maximum.

The Assurant one doesn't sound much better than buying "regular" coverage rather than temporary coverage. But of course it depends on what you actually get, prices, etc.

Thanks Geoff,

The Assurant does appear to be more like regular coverage. The difference is that with Assurant I can get the coverage from the day I arrive.

All the regular short term medical insurance I have found seems to have waiting periods. Am I wrong?

The Seven Corners one is cheaper, but as you point out, if the worst were to happen it could cost a lot more that $100k. I think I'd rather be safe than sorry, not with a wife and two kids to worry about.

HCC: http://www.hccmis.com/texas-short-te...cal-insurance/

also appears to be quite good, as in it appears to offer reasonable coverage....
