Default Identification for Drivers License, Georgia US

Hey guys, just wondered if somebody can help me with a question,

I am in immigration process, interview has been granted, I received my Work Permit I.D. and SSN is coming shortly.

I want to apply for my drivers License but i never actually got a drivers license in the U.K.

On the DMV it lists a load of things you will need in order to take a test, one of them being either a U.S. Passport or a U.S. Birth certificate. Obviously, being a UK national i have neither of these, Is the government issued Work Permit eligible as a form of identification for this?

Other than that, i can't see there being any problem in going ahead and taking the tests, practical, written and vision.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks a bunch

You will need a birth certificate even from the UK to prove your age. Your passport will also do for that purpose. You need your social security number and YES you need your employment authorization card, if you do not have a valid visa in your passport which entitles you to live and work in the US.

You will probably also need proof of your living address. If so that will be listed on the DMV website as well.

I would recommend you study the driver's handbook/manual before taking the written test.

according to the Georgia Department of Driver Services web site Transfer Unexpired Out-of-Country Driver's License

"Documentation showing your identity, residential address, full social security number, and U.S. citizenship or proof of lawful status in the United States."

the site also has links to the
  1. Knowledge Exam.
  2. Road Skills Test.
  3. Vision Exam.
don't use other bogus sites

Remember that any license issued will expire at the same time as the visa/green card. I tried to renew online but it made me visit the DMV, where they checked the expiration of my GC before renewing my license to that date. Once I got my citizenship, I got a new license which was valid for the normal duration.

There's a whole dang paragraph for non citizens on the GA DMV site.

Oh and don't worry about the practical 'test' - I hit the gas rather than the brake during it and still passed with a 95. People here can't drive. Newsflash.

Although Vimto would know better than I living in Atlanta, I'm just up here in quiet Banks County

I didn't and passed the written test no problem. Of course I had spent 4 years as a passenger in the US so I absorbed lots of road stuff

I took some practise tests using an app called DMV Genie. It helped with some nuances like how long you could lose licence for in x scenario.

A lot of it's pretty straight forward stuff but some of the stuff like how many points for speeding in a school zone, or how long you lose your license for if you're caught drag racing are worth reading up on. I've only ever had a NC license (not counting my British one) so GA may be completely different.

The written test always has stuff about blood alcohol levels for teens, or driving curfews for teens, or number of passengers you can carry as a teen - don't skip those sections of the handbook as not relevant! And what to do around school buses and their various colored flashing lights, that always comes up.

I assume you are talking about Georgia, which is appropriate for the thread, just to add a note that this is not true for all states.
