Not 'the coolest city in New England' then ?

On the crime issue - I suspect that Providence has the same issues that a lot of UK cities have - e.g Nottingham - that the city boundary is tightly drawn and therefore the statistics are skewed. The actual population of the city itself is 170,000 whereas the population of the metro area is circa 1 million. Most crime happens in the city centre and the inner city rather than the large suburbs like Warwick or Cranston (which haven't been annexed to Providence) and voila massive crime rates per 100,000. Hence why Providence can appear in the list for the most dangerous city in the nation and the safest at the same time.

Then again, it might be an absolute shitehole - i've never been.

Friendliest people i have ever met are in Northern California - climate almost same as the UK (hmm)but less summer rain
Very easy to adapt because of this factor - no bugs but bears, earthquakes and Tsunami's all of which I havent come across and dont really want to!

I've heard that Redding in boiling hot - in fact anywhere about 40 mins inland from where I live in Eureka is hot but Eureka is coolish but sunny in the summer (average temp low 60's) tho can be dull and foggy and wet but mildish in the winter

The winters here are bloody freezing - and so much snow! Of course, you don't get as much snow down in Columbus as we do up here - we get the "lake effect" from Lake Erie - not fun. I've been here 20 years now and I still cannot get used to the winters. I hate them!!

Generally, I'd say California/Oregon/Washington, as the climate (weather and political) are not that different from UK. Moving from London to SF was very easy.

I've been here for 15 years and have lived in WI, NC, CO, FL, TX and now MA.
It really depends what is important to you. The friendliest people were in WI, but the winters were horrendous. The way of life was most laid back in NC. CO is full of healthy, outdoorsy types, FL and TX both do not have state income tax, but do have extreme weather. MA is the most like the UK.
However, I think it generalizes too much to talk about a particular state. It would be better to talk about specific towns or cities. Miami is not Jacksonville, San Antonio is not Houston, etc.
I have been in Boston for just over a year now and I love the fact that it is a "big" small city. It is very accessible by foot and the public transportation system, while not perfect (the subway stops running way too early) is it very reliable and relatively inexpensive. Because Boston is home to many good schools, and a lot of students stay in the area after they graduate, it has a lot of culture. If sports is your thing there are top level teams for all the major sports. Weather is nice in the summer, but a bit chilly in the winter. It is also easy to get to Europe.
However, I could probably make similar lists for Milwaukee, Charlotte, Denver, Tampa, San Antonio and Austin. (Places I have lived)

I live in the Southwest, and when I do come across Brits who live here (which is quite rare), they've often lived here for 15+ years. Those who like it seem to really, really like it - maybe they like it because it's so different. That's part of the appeal for me, anyway. The amusing part for me is that they still dress in an incredibly British way, which is what makes me notice them in the first place: can spot them a mile away!

Yes, a pin-stripe suit and bowler hat in the middle of the desert can be a dead giveaway.

Presumably, French Maid's Uniform or BDSM leathers.
