There is a pipe blockage situation in the guest house, which the landlord has attempted to repair once, but is still leading to some sewage overspill and smell, upsetting the guest house tenants..

I would be quite cautious with how one precedes in this situation. Setting the visa crap aside, the whole set up is pretty messed up imo. So, there is 1 lease with 2 families living on the same property in separate structures, correct?? Possible ordinance violation come to mind, also. Let me ask, who are named parties on the lease - all 4 adults?? If they withhold rent, are they hanging you dry to make up the difference in the rent? (Yes, if you are the named parties on the lease) If so, that is an internal matter between you all lessees, and to what potential legal or otherwise, consequence to you? I would emphasize that Tenant rights and rental laws vary tremendously from state to state, so if you have access to legal resources, consult it before doing anything.

What has your lawyer said?

You do not put anything into writing. Your lawyer puts things into writing.

Make sure you are in the right (legally) before proceeding.

It has been said a few times (once already by me), do not write anything in a letter or email unless through your own attorney.

+1

I would steer clear of it all now.
You've been kind and offered advice.
Just be aware that you also do not want to have a bad relationship with your landlord.
Stay out of it!
