you made me giggle there, I am on my way to the US on Thursday (hopefully) - I have my interview at London Embassy on Tuesday. So as this is my last Friday in the UK, tonight I had fish and chips, tomorrow I'm going for a wimpy and sunday will be a traditional roast, hope I didn't get your taste buds going too much there I'm stocked up with Hula Hoops, Quavers and various kinds of chocolate to take with me too!! My fiance was over here in January and had never had the experience of Wimpy before and now he's hooked!

I hope your craving passes

All the best - Fran

As for myself, I'd settle for some real fish and chips. You know, the sort from the
shop round the corner, wrapped in newspaper.

Default A DISAPPOINTED TEXAN IN LONDON

I visited London about this time several years ago, and had many frustrations:

1 Couldn't find ANY coverage of our March Madness college basketball tourney.
Wandered from pub to pub without HOPE

2 NO FREE REFILLS ON DRINKS.....ANYWHERE!!!

3 NO MEXICAN FOOD!!!!

4 NOBODY FILLED MY GLASS WITH ICE.......EVER

5 NO ICED TEA

6 NO COFFEE

7. TINY PORTIONS OF FOOD ON THE PLATE

But seriously, had a GREAT time! Almost got killed at speakers' corner in Hyde Park
when I waxed eloquent about why America was the greatest country in the world. LOVED
the desserts....LOVED the people...LOVED the trains....LOVED the museums and plays

Later.

Yes, dear old Wimpy's. But believe it or not, the most brilliant Wimpy's I've seen
was in Paris. Keeping with their name, city of lights, there was brilliant neon all
over it. I used to be really keen on their Knickerbocker Glories.

Never mind the food (although I do miss fish and chips) - I want the NHS!!!! Never thought I'd find myself sticking up for the good ol' British National Health Service BUT blimey the price of health insurance over here - it's a bigger liabilty than our house note!!!

For me it's been the hardest thing to adapt to this lack of socialised health care. My daughter and I have been over here since last April without healthcare and it's not that we're poor our family is just one of the 39 million families here whose income is way above poverty lines but just it difficult to meet the exorbitant costs involved. Checkout www.CoveringTheUninsured.org for some real horror stories - second thoughts don't until you get your insurance through!!

Hopefully yours will be more affordable if it's coming through your husbands employer. We are a family of 5 and to get us all covered is around $800 per month!! Anyway this month we used our tax refund to buy a policy so provided they take us I won't have that insecurity hanging over us anymore for at least a year!! I have asthma so that won't be covered and I'm as healthy as a horse otherwise so we probably won't get value for money in terms of calling on the insurance but then again what price peace of mind for those 'what if' moments...

I know what you mean about ER costs too. I had to go to the emergency room with an asthma attack last May and the bill was $500 then last week (10 months later!!!!) I get a further bill for the same incident for another $175 for doctors fees that apparently I was never charged for on the hospital bill because the doctor bills separately. And to add insult to injury it came direct from a collection agency who acknowledged that the doctor failed to bill me (and loads of others too apparently) and had just lumped it over to a collection agency to sort out.

Phew!! that was a relief to get that off my checst!!

Long live the National Health Service warts and all!!!

Yep you have had a rough ordeal. The emergency room bill came to $1027 the drs fees $265 and the ultrasound $146.

Thing is though cant we get medicaid and still qualify as not being a public charge?

Blimey and I thought I robbed with my er bill!!

I thought medicaid was only available for the desititute?? Forgive my ignorance if this is way wrong. If there is any way of getting it I'll be first in the line!! But I bet it would constitute being a public charge....

You are right on that one. I know of several women who recieved it a few years ago
for their kids, and they now have to pay it back through deductions taken out of
their child support.

I'd research that a bit first if I were you. I don't know your status, but in some
circumstances it can be damaging to your immigration status. BTW, those dr fees are
not all that bad considering some I have seen. I've seen some for $500 in dr fees
for doing a simple test which didn't take 30 minutes. If you have to go to a
specialist, God forbid. Fees can be $150 per office visit on up. I think I am in the
wrong business!
