i need help with filing an fbar

so i posted on here about a uk bank acc being over 10k and someone advised i needed to file an FBAR.

i have just looked into doing this and have a few questions as i appear to be abit stuck.

i am on an l2 visa and dont work or currently have a US tax payer identification number or tin number etc. The bank acc in question is my own personal acc that is over the $10,000 threshold. could some advise what i need to do or how i go about doing this any help would be great.

Thanks

FBAR is done on-line.

It doesn't matter that the account is a personal one in the UK. It has to be reported if it's over the threshold.

You just report the account information and your estimate (if you don't have concrete info) on how much is in there.

All true, but I think the question is, can she file without having a taxpayer identification number.

I believe so, from memory they accept numerous ways to identify yourself.

It was a while ago (10 yrs) but when we first did this on an L visa we applied for an ITIN for my wife when submitting first tax return using form W-9 *which requires attached the tax return with the form). Once we had the ITIN we were able to complete the FBAR (the deadline to file them is Oct - the deadline is April but it is automatically extended to OCt if you don't file in April)

It doesn't require a TIN. If the TIN box 3 is left blank you can enter a passport number or foreign TIN in box 4. The FBAR instructions have specific details on this.

You file here:

The last sentence is not accurate. The 10k threshold applies to all accounts together. If you're above the threshold, you have to declare all accounts, even accounts which are under the threshold on their own.
