I thought a debit card allows you to make cash withdrawals from cash machines but also lets you use it to buy items in stores and online, as far as I'm aware a cash card only lets you withdraw money from cash machines which is not only inconvenient if you don't have credit cards, but most banks limit the amount of money you can withdraw from a cash machine regardless of how much money you have in the account so large purchases are a hassle.

I had the same letter, I found it quite amusing because I knew there was a minimum deposit limit and it has been years and years since I made any such deposit. I got the impression it was penny-pinching so they didn't have to pay me interest anymore on the account. But I have bugger all in it anyway and I only ever use it to buy Christmas presents for people I know in the UK so I couldn't give a crap honestly. Gave up all my UK credit cards many years ago now. I've actually gone through several debit cards without ever using them.
You must buy some pretty cheap presents.

If you can't locate another bank account, i think xoom.com lets you transfer money directly to pay bills, rather than depositing into a bank account first. I've been meaning to try it out but decided it was safer just to continue sending to my UK bank.
