Oh my, I live in such a cheap area. I pay 900 a year. My mom paid 3k in Maine though and I thought that was insane. We got this house for a steal at the height of the housing crash. It was on the market for years and no one was interested, The owners let it go back to the bank and they just wanted it gone. We got it for pennies. I felt like I should be wearing a robbers mask when we closed on the house.
I see people complaining about 5 dollar a pound beef prices for ground beef. Geeez I am paying 2.79 a pound, and 3 something for milk.

I have read the comments of others with huge interest re: comparison, especially from the 'oldies' who have been in the US for decades. I am a newbie, only 3 months old , even though I have been in and out of the US for decades but not actually lived.
I am still settling near the DC area - Silver Spring, but who knows I may end up in some other cities or state.
Well, my observation so far ... very different sense of humor. They love the British accent; they are friendly and willing to help; loads of bad drivers - real bad; speed limit very low - 55/65 mph; too many police on the highway monitoring speed; loaf of bread and milk expensive and certain other things; houses are large and more to rent as opposed to the UK; gas is very cheap, but long driving to places; loads of parking spaces and wide; oh you have to pay first before you pump your gas (still amuses me)
Also, too much cable talking heads. Loads of people begging with mental issues. Dislike the police brutality though - not that I have experienced it other than what I see on telly.
All in all I am liking it and hope t settle fast with a view of getting my first 'large' house, as opposed to my tiny 2 end terrace 'house' in the UK. Start my first job on Monday -- yippee!!

I'm in Maine and I pay way more than $3k property tax - more like $7k. That's on a $400k+ house though. In return we get an amazing education system. At least 3/4 of our property tax goes straight to the schools. I don't particularly mind as I have three kids.
