How not to enter the US
A Somerset woman deported from the US has pleaded guilty to re-entering the country illegally. Katharine Hiscox, 33, from Shepton Mallet is said to have swum across the St John River from Canada to Maine.
She appeared before a court in the state charged with entering the US without inspection and being in the country after deportation.
She was remanded in custody pending a pre-sentence report, which could take up to three months.
If convicted, she faces up to two years in prison and a fine of up to £140,000.
Ms Hiscox had been to the US three times on different visas, the court heard.
She was deported from Atlanta in January because of visa problems and barred from re-entry.
It is understood she turned up soaking wet on the doorstep of a house in Maine on the night of 6 August.
She was driven to a local hotel and the police were called. Border agents found her the next day at a petrol station.
Ms Hilcox wept as she heard she would be remaining in custody.
She's lucky she didn't try that in January!

It would be interesting to know why she was so desperate to be in the US.

She should have swam from Cuba. They would have let her stay if she had.
