As pointed out, you don't pay property tax. The landlord will do that. And sometimes water is not included in the rental agreement. It is always good to negotiate it.

I would recommend that you negoitate for at least 2 months of car rental in your package. It takes a while to get your SS# which you need to get a NJ driving licence. Without one it is difficult/expensive to get insurance.
You don't have to register your car/plates every year and get it inspected in NJ?

Lucky git.

You do have to register every year which is around $40 I think. The inspection is every 2 years but is free if you go to the state inspection center.

bugger...you've got it good....around here, every year, $120 for a residential motor, plus $20 to register the plate, $40 if it is a vanity plate on a standard print, lobster, USM and all the other fun plates are an extra $20-60 depending on the cause....and inspection, well that's cheap, every year at $15

As I understand it, both parents need to be either working or actively seeking employment in order to claim childcare as a deductible. Certainly I was under the impression that it wasn't possible if one parent was on a non-work visa such as an H4. It's probably different on an L4, where the trailing spouse can at least claim to be looking for work.

Guys,

thanks again for all your contributions on this thread. The company has a habit of moving people around every 2-3 years but that's not set in stone. If my company enter me under a temporary visa and I end up staying longer, can it be problematic obtaining a LPR ?

You would need a commitment that they will sponsor you for GC.

Best to start the process asap, just in case.

It wasn't until we'd been here a year and had TX licenses that the cost came down dramatically (we now pay $730 for the same two cars for six months).

As for Jumping Dorris' experience of huge cellphone deposit payments - our answer was to use Virgin Mobile prepaid. So long as you have a credit card they don't require any down payment at all... but the phones actually cost money and are crappy, and yet again you'll be treated as if you're a teenager, since only teens could possibly not have a credit history, right? My cellphone came with a fixed selection of polyphonic ringtones, not one of which was suitable for anyone over 19!
You have to join AIG international https://www.aig-is.com/ to get the deal but for $400 you also get an unsecured HSBC Credit Card
