I was watching a House Hunters International the other day.... Anyway, this American woman wanted a flat in Paris... I couldn't believe how tiny they were for what she could afford to pay...

I saw one for a chap looking in Tokyo...he finally found a place that was "quite large"...but the muppet shipped his massive bed from the US to Japan and suddenly it looked like a cartoon apartment

When you look at some of the condos and apartments in SF you can pay $8k for 1500 sq ft. There are loads of rentals above $15k and even some above $25k, who pays that?

Re: How much is rent?
We are currently hunting for a new rental and having real problems, prices have increased a ridiculous amount since we took our rental here 18 months ago. We're in Silicon Valley.
We are looking for a 3 bed detached house, with a modern kitchen and bathrooms, need around 2,000 sq ft of space and a garden. Prices are currently around $4,500-$6,000 which is just crazy.
What's the average rent price in your area for this kind of house? I think I do live in the most expensive area in the US

A comparable property in the same neighbourhood would rent for about $3500-$3600. I'm just hoping our Landlord doesn't figure that out

We are paying $950 a month for a 4 bed 2 bath in Bennington VT. Bargain, but this area of Vermont is pretty cheap as there isn't much in the way of employment.

I was wondering the percentage of rent people paid out of their income, but could only ask how much people paid or the %, otherwise it would be obvious as to how much people earned.

There are some crazy prices, you can pay $3k for under 1000 sq ft in Palo Alto, in a 2 story apartment block with no view.

Rents have certainly started to go up rapidly here. There are two obvious reasons for this. Firstly, it's much more difficult to get a mortgage these days. And secondly, the software industry is doing well at the moment with plenty of vc money floating around. There's plenty of competition for places to rent from people who are pretty well paid.

We are in Mission Viejo in Orange County and pay $3,000 for 2800 sq.ft 3 bedroom with a pool. When we moved in in 2008 we were paying $3,300 a month but we just keep telling our Landlord we will stay if he lowers the rent

That's a smart landlord, and smart of you to put it forward to him. It costs money to re-advertise and it may take more than a month to get someone else in, meanwhile the landlord is paying all of the costs. Realtors fees are often a months rent so even if it's empty for only a month, the landlord would be out of pocket $6,600 to put new tennants in at a higher rate. Basically it wouldn't cost him anything to lower the rent if it's a guaranteed income for him for a set time and in fact unless you stay there for a very long time (3+ years) it won't cost him a penny. Having a steady income as a landlord is a very very nice thing, it takes a lot of stress out of the situation. (Speaking from experience).
