Just about to sign a rental agreement for $1250/month here in Victorville, 3 bed 2 bath with pool, just first and last month rent to move in. Not sure about square footage: it's not huge but it's a modern, single story house.

Reminds me of one of the girls who works for me relocated from Bakersfield to LA, apparantly her daughters class were talking about good school trips they had been on, Getty Villa, Disneyland were the 2 top ones, my friends daughter said she had been cotton picking

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't asked this question. I thought it would be quite expensive where you are.

Down my way, price isn't the issue...there just isn't anything with a garden, in a nice area going, so there's massive competition.

Hell, when we were apartment hunting last year, one place had 18 applications already within a week when we looked that we didn't even bother apply....and we're well out in the burbs

If it makes you feel any better, we've got cousins up in Maine who have a 6 bedroom house that they built on about 2 acres of land and their mortgage is $600 a month.

Yes, I felt a little bit sick inside too when I heard

It's half what we pay in rent for a 2 bed, 1 bath apartment, 1K sq/ft...but at least we have a garden this time, last place we were in was almost the same money but was 950 sq/ft and no garden at all...but that place had a one car garage :/

We rent a 4-bed, 2500 sqft SFH about 20 miles out of Seattle, but pretty close to the Microsoft campus and in the best school district, so rents are quite high. The going rate is about $1 per sqft up to around 2800 sqft.
Property taxes here are around $5500 - $6500 per year for houses of that size and larger. No State income tax either :-)

Move to Seattle - Silicon Valley sounds awfully expensive!

Depends, it's all relative! It's bigger than my previous town in the UK which was considered big. If I live "down the hill" in the LA basin proper then rent goes up 50% and more. I'd much rather live somewhere cheap and nice and a bit further out than fork out a fortune for a shithole that is closer to... what exactly?!
