When you need to be spooked, location is everything! We have the only Haunted 10th Century Norman Castle built by hand by Sir Harry Andrews in the Tri-state area!

I"m guessing it's like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon?

Check out the pictures on the link - it actually looks better than I had expected! (To be fair, I've heard of it, but had VERY low expectations.) I haven't been but will have to check it out now.

Kentucky... but as I didn't leave the airport, I don't count this as having visited that state

I've been through Cleveland and Cincinnati airports -- and I don't count them. I was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, which is on the KY/TN border.

Actually, properly visited states:

Colorado
Nevada
Utah
Arizona
Wyoming
Montana
South Dakota

Driven through:
Idaho

Flown through:
California
New Jersey
Illinois
In a couple of weeks I can add New York to my 'properly visited list

In Canada, it's much easier, I have 'properly visited':

Newfoundland and Labrador
Nova Scotia
Ontario
Alberta
British Columbia

Must try harder!

I've done all the ones on the East Coast.
Plus Louisiana
and driven through a bit of Alabama

The problem is all the ones I want are (from what I understand) incredibly dull, apart from Alaska (obviously) which is bloody far away and far more deserving of the 2 weeks tops I could probably take off in one go.

As a minimum to qualify I think you need the following:

a. At least 1 hour on the ground on state territory
b. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or beers at a local establishment, and most importantly,
c. A T-Shirt.
On a tangential note -- there is a fairly famous case involving the above "rules."

It is fairly well known that the US government would use various laws other than the ones directly dealing with the main crimes to convict Mafia kingpins -- the classic example being Al Capone being convicted for income tax evasion.

Learned Hand's opinion in Di Pasquale v Karnuth, 158 F.2nd 878 (2nd Cir. 1947) is of interest. Judge Hand described Mr. DiPasquale as less than a sterling member of society. In 1945, the government wanted him banished to Italy. The issue came down to when Mr. DiPasquale had last entered the United States.

In 1918 -- Mr. DiPasquale took an overnight sleeper train from Detroit MI to Buffalo NY. The train made no stops. Mr. DiPasquale boarded the train in Detroit and left the train in Buffalo. However, while Mr. DiPasquale slept, the train transited Canadian territory.

Note that the case came out 29 years after the train trip in question.
