what's more annoying is because the test is so much easier over here with so little being tested, bit of an insult ain't it really

Like to read of their trepidation and debate whether to try for manual here sometimes. Must say, they're a lot more polite than us Brits about their adopted home country.

I may be wrong, but in Georgia, if I claimed I hadn't driven before, you have to have a learners permit and then prove you've driven for a set amount of hours.
Probably different between states. I got my Ohio license by showing up and taking the test without claiming any previous license. That expired before I got to Oregon, so I took the Oregon test and got a license there, also without previous license. Then I swapped my Oregon license for a New Mexico license. Didn't even need an eye test for that one. (Actually, I think the rule is: If you can drink half a bottle of tequilla, stand up and show proof of NM address, you get a NM license.)

Oregon also had a strange program where Germans could swap their Deutschland licenses for Oregon ones.

hehe...well I only mention the manual business because I got stuck behind this yank driver that was test driving a car in England, she pulled out in front of me, then stalled, started, stalled, drove 10m, stalled, then up the road at the lights, she stalled, stalled at the next set of lights half way down the road, got out, handed the keys to the dealer bloke in a huff screaming "******* brits with ******* manuals" and walked back up the road leaving the car and dealer at the middle of the lights *lol*

Did you read the one about UK tax??

Thanks for the speedy heads up and usefull link...just wanted to know though, if the tax free allowance is £4745...then why has the temping agency been taking tax out of my pay because i have not yet made anywhere near the breakoff point of £4745...and if one still has to pay tax even before reaching this amount, would i be able to claim this back ?
Ah, the joys of reading a US Expat getting tax taken out ever pay check

That's probably because Japan is one of the few countries that drives on the left, like the British, right?

they do need the license translated by the embassy...and there's a huge list of countries where you can change the license, random to, including zimbabwe etc...so might be to do with side of road...but canadians can transfer license too, but only for an automatic license unless they have proof they took there test in a manual...

The "international driver's license" as you put it is not a license, it is a permit, if I'm not mistaken. It is useless without an original driving license.

Residents in the US should not drive with the permit together with their license because the foreigner is in fact just driving on their foreign license. The permit is a translation of a non-English license into license which is pointless if the original license is in English and it is used for the purpose of driving in an English speaking country like the US.

I've been stopped by the local police here quite a few times. Small town, not a lot for them to do, zero crime rate etc.,

On my last stop around Christmas for not really stopping at a stop sign, I'd forgotten to take my UK licence out with me. I popped in with it later in the evening and they reminded me I had to take my test in the New Year. Gawd luv 'em, they gave me a Christmas present of the Mass Driving Regs, all wrapped up and everything.

I'm hoping the State Troopers who do the driving trest round here as half as nice as my local police.

It's 10 days here in California. But that's if you are resident. They have a criteria for establishing residency. I left it about 6 months though.
