How long before a UK passport expires can you renew it in US?
 

I'm sure I've read you have to wait until there is 6 months left but can anyone confirm this.

I don't remember, but I know that I renewed it with about nine months left on it.

Well, put it this way - you are not supposed to travel with less than 6 months left on your passport. Some countries won't accept you in. With that being the case I suggest you don't leave it too close to the six months unless you have no intention of travelling. It only takes approximately 4 weeks (ours were back in 2 weeks) to get a new one.

strange - I currently hold a passport valid until 2017... had it renewed just before getting here

I thought all passports were only valid for 10 years

As far as I know, there is no limit as to when you can renew a passport.

If you renew a British passport in the UK, any remaining validity on the will be added to the time on the new passport, up to a maximum of 9 months.

I don't know if this particular regulation applies to renewals abroad, but as noted above you might well have to renew a passport before it has only 6 months' validity remaining, since after that it cannot be used for entry into certain countries.

My suggestion would be to renew sooner (within reason) rather than later if you intend to use the passport for travelling.

I renewed it with a year before it expired. Judging by the forms, you can also renew it even if it has already expired. Took about 3 weeks and was no hassle at all.

As some others have said, I think you can renew it whenever, certainly don't have to wait 6 months before it expires. Renewed mine when I was starting the process to come over here to have one less thing to worry about, I think it had a year left on it. The government aren't going to care if you renew sooner or more frequently, more tax for the coffers!
