It probably happens in the UK now too, but I still find it kind of rude, myself.
I find it rude myself.

I seem to have inherited some grandkids of varying ages. I don't recall them ever saying 'please' when asking for anything.
When they ask me and I reply : "Where's your manners" or " How about a 'please' " they look at me like I'm an alien.
I guess I have much work ahead.

Yes, that one too. It is rude, even if the rudeness is unintentional. I always end up overcompensating by being extra nice for my own order.

We're trying with our daughter (our son is pretty good at remembering now). She's not too bad with saying 'thank you' but quite often I have to break out the 'what do you say' before I give her something she asks for.

Of course they don't say 'please' and 'thank you' in Spain. They speak Spanish there, for a kick off

Barney would make them want to kill you. I'd be happy with 'rude' for now

Oh, but you are. So long as you have your visa you'll be OK though because you'll be a legal alien.

If only I was going to New York, I could make a song about it.

The rudest person I met was a nurse at my AOS medical in 2007 in GA...
"Oh you're from England....I hate the English"
ME...'Why?'
"Because of what they did in 1812"
ME...'Well I wasn't actually there'
"Well..your ancestors were, and I'll never forgive them'
ME..."Actually, I'm only 1st generation British....Everybody before me was from Hungary"
'Well, they're still British'

The only thing that kept me from kicking her in the shins was that she was doing my medical, and I thought she might "find" some disease that might make a difference to my AOS....:frown:
Suck it up, Sue, was the hardest advice I ever gave myself!!

Things are pretty bad if you have to reach all the way back to 1812. Whoa! Sounds like she had serious issues.:D

Well done on the self-restraint.
Did you ask her where her ancestors were from?

I'm just impressed that you found an American who actually cares (or at least pretends to care) about the War of 1812.

Then again, she sounds like one of those types who refers to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression."
