In town and the 'burbs the dog will be safe, but if you venture further afield, out into state and national parks or wilderness areas where it is legal to allow your dog off the leash, you would be very well advised to buy a high visibility vest for your dog.

What Boiler said - if your dog is thrashing around in the undergrowth, running through woodland, or in tall grass, there is a very real risk that it could be shot.
"Blaze orange" is worn by hunters across the US (in many states it is legally required) to avoid them inadvertently becoming a target, and the same for their dogs.

They shouldn't. I live adjacent to state land where hunting is permitted, and I dread hunting season, even though when my dogs are out alone they are in a fenced area that does not abut the boundary. If I hear shots in the distance, I bring them right into the house. The bow hunters are more stealthy, so I don't know if they are out there, but most of them do seem to be more skilled than the shooters.
