Re: How do you like your state?
I have lived in Oklahoma, great place to bring up kids, humid hot Summers, great people, driving and getting around pretty simple, wouldn't be too upset if we got moved back there.
Lived in Texas, personally, I didn't like it there, very hot/humid Summers, found the people a bit unfriendly (jmho) kids hated their schools, hubby hated his job, so that was part of our discomfort there. Wouldn't be too happy to live there again. But could be a completely different experience.
Now living in Illinois, hot humid Summers, hate the mozzies! used to love it here, but ready to move on anytime now. Kids had/have good school here, good friends, people mostly pretty friendly.
I think no matter which State you live in, there are going to be good/bad points to it, but as the old saying goes 'Home is what you make it' There are so many huge differences between States here, there is probably at least one or two that could cover most people priorities for a good/happy life.
I have always wanted to live in WA State, or VA, maybe one day :-)

I think on the whole, that is all you can ask for.

Texas - only gripes are v. hot & humid in summer but winter is really nice and lasts longer than you might think. Also bible bashers getting on my nerves at the moment - don't know why just keep meeting them - they're everywhere like mozzies - oh yeah and mozzies and hurricanes but haven't had any this year (touch wood).
Like; my big house, gas prices, sunny most of the time which keeps your spirits up, hubby likes job, son happy as a 10 year old can be at school, don't have to work, we get out and do more here than we did at home.

Florida gets the bad press on this board (some of it justified, it has to be said) - but by and large I do like it where we live. If you like being on or in the water, it's really hard to go wrong with an almost year round season.
I think "How much do you like your state" is a bit to broad - most states are diverse enough to have some crappy parts and some good parts; although you could say the same thing about towns, I suppose.

Pennsylvania is nice, the people are friendly, but very Christian and conservative, spring, and autumn are gorgeous but a bit too humid in the summer and too cold in the winter (for me). Like Chris says S. Central PA is good in proximity to visiting other places, 2 hrs to DC, 2hrs to Philly, 4 hrs from NYC.

From a British perspective I wouldn't call PA liberal It's pretty conservative.

Pennsylvanis is OK. The autumn is lovely but the winters and summers are beginning to get to me.
I think it is very conservative. I feel as though I have gone back in time to the 50's.
I am in SW PA and I find it very expensive for general day to day things and just that bit too far from DC,Philly and NYC.

Re: How do you like your state?
Just for fun I guess, what does everyone think of their new home state? Why did you pick that state in particular, and was it all you imagined or expected? Would you move to a different one, or move back to the UK?
Ok let's say this then to help spur some discussion. I'm originally from Puerto Rico, which is a Spanish speaking US territory in the middle of the Caribbean, but my parents moved us to PA and I've gone back every year for 3 months to see my family and I still think PA offers a much better quality of life. I love the cold weather and the changing seasons. The beach, sunshine, and sweltering heat are no appeal to me. It's not nice when you're in the middle of winter and it's still a hot 85 degrees outside, that's my opinion.

Met boyfriend, who is now husband, in grad school just outside of Paris. Decided on some cities where we wanted to live together (Boston, SF, London, Barcelona, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong etc) and San Francisco/Bay Area was the first city where one of us got a job. Now been here since 2002 and loving it; I can't imagine moving back to Blighty even though I still own an apartment in London.
I live a 3 minute walk from the beach and county park 3 minutes in the other direction. Commute to work is 40 minutes but it's down highway 280 which beats M25 any day. House prices are way too high but they are in UK too. Want to move to a place where schools are better and commute is shorter but need $1.6m to move to a 4 bed place which isn't even that nice. CRAZY!!!!!
Weather is great most of the time. People are friendly. It's quirky but different. Drive to skiing in Tahoe about 10 weekends each winter; you can't do that in London.

Southern California, LA to be precise. Expensive, hot and full of superficial people.
The economy is f***ed.
The beaches are nice, and you can have your fill of theme parks. You can go visit famous dead peoples graves (No7 on the Tripadvisor things to do list), and see a big white metal word. All ok for a vacation but for everyday life
Not to mention its built on one of the biggest faults and everyone is waiting for the 'Big One'
But, if you can be arsed to get up early before the heat there are some nice walks, there are some fantastic museums, sitting out to eat at 8.00pm is always nice. And its driving distance to some fantastic places.
For me, it'll do for a few years.
