If you put it on the outside then butter will drip down your t-shirt. Then the t-shirt will have to be washed. So do you put it in a top loader or................................................ .................................................. .........

I lived on cheese and ham toasties pre covid - lunch fare. No onions though. Publix pepperjack slices, done in the toaster oven. Mayo or miracle whip me no care.

There is a slightly marvelous convenience store down the road from us. It doubles as a bar, its beer selection is very good. For example they on occasions get Pliny the Elder in.
One of the adverts that they place outside for sandwiches, announces "The Cheesy British". I can see i am going to have to give it a go now.

If I could find a proper seedy loaf here, then yes, like a flash. The kind that used to be called a granary loaf in the UK.
