Mayo? Cream cheese?? Spray cheese?

I must be boring, my cheese and onion sandwich is bread, butter, a good cheddar and a modest amount of thinly sliced red onion.

What about grilled cheese sandwiches?

Butter on the inside or the outside of the bread?

I use toaster bags…no butter…just cheese between 2 slices of bread. Pop it in the toaster…yum.

Neither, a light spray of olive oil in the pan

My favorite. White sliced bread. Cheddar, or Swiss. Frying pan with a goodly amount of butter. Fry the sandwich on each side, till the cheese is well melted. Eat. Then make another.

Then have a cup of strong tea, and go for a 20 mile cycle ride.

OMG I’d never heard of toaster bags. What on earth are they, that they don’t burn? I just looked it up, and it said they’re made of non stick material but I’m not sure what that means..

The food does not stick to the inside. They have a limited life but can be used dozens of times. I originally bought them from Poundland in the UK. Cheap as chips from Amazon.

I would have to do that the other way round. Exercise on a full stomach never goes well.

OH makes them with a smear of mayonnaise on the outside of the bread, then grill/fry.

Wonder if the OP has got the answer or is thinking WTF have I started. Cheese is a very touchy subject on the Canadian forums as we have the odd cheese aficionado's (snobs) and the lack of quality cheeses available or if available the horrendous prices charged.

If you are using a toasted sandwich maker then the instructions say butter the OUTSIDE of the bread. stops it sticking.

Cheese is the one general type of food where I really don’t think I’m missing anything by living in the US. I agree, good cheese is expensive here - it can be $20 or $30 per pound. But the variety and quality is superb. Vermont and NY (rural, northern NY - NYC you can obviously buy anything) I’m mostly talking about, but even bog-standard, mass market cheapo cheese from Wisconsin etc. is often quite decent. The Wisconsin equivalent of “Danish blue” is quite acceptable for instance.

What you need is Branston. Or Monster Munch. Or both.
