House sitting in America

Hi all, another thread out of curiosity!

Would a British citizen need a certain Visa to house sit in America? (most likely unpaid)

Thanks.

You must just to come over on vacation, stay for free in someone's house, and do no work in the USA, right?

You can do that on the VWP for a less-than-90 day visit.

On the other hand, if you'll be doing any maintenance around the house, such as a property manager might do, it could be construed as "work", which is not allowed.

One could argue that if you are receiving free accommodation in return for house sitting that might be construed as payment in kind (you're probably going to ask "but would anyone find out, how would they know?"). If on the other hand you were paying them and had some sort of summer short term rental contract that would be ok.
