What sort of monthly cost could we expect for a typical 4 bed 2.5 bath on a good size lot, say in Fort Myers or Jacksonville?. Any recommendation for good neighbourhoods.

Bit of a big difference and distance between the two. I can tell you, if you're interested in Jacksonville, look to the south. Suburbs to the south of downtown are far superior and safer than the northside. Areas like Mandarin or Southside are very nice or you can go over the river to Orange Park. The northern part of St Johns County is very desirable and still in commuting distance of Downtown. I don't have any idea of rental costs, but if you at least know what areas to search on Rent.com it will help.
