House Insurance

Can anyone recommend companies for house insurance? Or ones to avoid? As we'll be renting, we'll be wanting the equivalent of contents insurance here - if there is an equivalent? We're yet to sort out a house and are booked into temporary accommodation when we arrive. What do we do about insuring our valuables whilst we're in temporary accommodation? The bulk of our things will go into storage if we've not found a house before it gets over there.

You'll be looking for "Renters Insurance". Common and not terribly expensive. I'm with Farmers but have never filed a claim so don't really know how well things would work.

You have something here called "renters insurance" which is basically what you need. Geico sorted out mine when I rented. They don't supply it themselves (it's underwritten via Assurant) but was $20 cheaper than exactly the same policy direct through the insurer.

We pay $15 a month with State Farm for full coverage up to $35,000 in possessions and $100,000 personal.

OP, if you haven't done it already, take a look at getting AIG inbound USA program
http://www.travelguardworldwide.com/...r-brochure.pdf

it costs about $450 for the year ( if you're getting a car through IAS they may well throw this in for you - ask them).

We got them to sort out all the insurances we needed when we arrived and they saved us that $450 on the first 6 months' car insurance. They go and find the insurance companies that won't try to look at your credit history, that will take your foreign no-claims into account. They'll find renter's insurance for you. A company that will give you a non-secured credit card as well. You can ask them for advice on almost anything, you can ask them to find out stuff for you .

Money well spent imo. Saved me a load of time and money.

Re: House Insurance

We used Nationwide for my renter's insurance and it was $169 per annum.

If you are going into temporary accommodations, then what is the insurance suppose to cover if it is their furnishings and not yours? Place you valuable jewelry in a safe deposit box at the bank if you are worried about being the victim of a house break-in.

Premiums will go down when you add life, auto and house to your insurance account. So choose a company which you will use for your auto and future house.

A lot of my tenants use State Farm for some reason, not sure why.
