Can we start a sweepstake on the total amount that the insurance co will be dinged for? I'll start the bidding at $40K for the ER and 2 days in ICU, no let's make it $55K.

Nah, it was:

E.R.

3 days CCU

We don't see the actual hospital bill as we have insurance. We will only see the doctors' bills as Blue Cross sends us notification of what they paid.

LOL, Ray, if I did that he would have a heart attack never mind fibrillation.

You would have laughed when you saw me having to move his truck. It is a standard and its been years since I've driven a standard. But after a few jerks and sputters I managed. But you would have pissed yourself laughing.

Oh Rete! I'm sorry I rarely come to the USA forum, and never saw your post until now! Yikes! I hope things go well now, I'm glad he's OK. Take care of yourself as well, we don't want you getting all stressed out on top of everything!

Hugs!

Thank you for the kind words and prayers. Mr. SM came home from the hospital on Friday and we spent a quiet weekend. Now we are revamping the menus to exclude salt for his blood pressure. Only problem is we don't use table salt on the table and I use only a smidgen when cooking and have always relied on herbs to flavor food. We rarely eat anything from a can and only use fresh veggies and fruits. Have been using butter substitutes for years and whole grain breads so what am I suppose to eliminate?

One of my best friends has the B.P. issue. They basically told her - don't eat stuff that tastes very salty. It's mostly prepared foods that have a lot of salt, so you're probably doing fine with the salt thing.

As far as butter substitutes - hydrogenated fats seem to now be thought to be worse than butter. I don't know in detail (afraid I like butter, just don't eat tons of it) but many margarines are now considered worse for you than butter.

Olive oil is the good cooking fat I believe, and probably some others.

They did say - everything in moderation. The more salt it has (olives for ex. are terrible) just eat less of it.

hope he's feeling better now.

Good luck with the cooking thing - I've found after looking after my mother in law since her heart attack in July (and subsequent 4 way bypass) that any prepared food is high in sodium, including pre-packaged meat. so, don't buy pre sliced for sandwiches, but roast it yourself.

You can't go wrong if you use only olive oil to replace all butter or butter substitutes. It really is the best and most readily available.

Also, basically any type of processed foods - this includes cheese, bread, crackers etc. Each piece you have contains at least a tiny bit of salt.

Eating a portion of oats a day will also help absorb those foods that aren't good for you too.
