I get 15 days vacation, 5 paid sick and 10 bank holiays - plus two floating days to be chosen from a number of options including things like Boxing Day and even Yom Kippur!
With regards Sick, I've been told that people do use them for the odd day off, but not to take the piss. I was really gutted when I couldnt bring over my 25 days holiday a year from the UK, bu then I thought about how much stuff I have on my doorstep (which I didnt have in the UK) like Skiing in the winter and 30 degrees constantly in the summer and I realised that actually, my weekends will actually FEEL like holidays, rather than dreary weathered breaks from the monotony of work. |

I think most Americans say a federal holiday day.
I get Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day plus the day after Thanksgiving. If you work retail, you can kiss most holidays goodbye. |

As others have said, they are often combined as PTO.
Only Europeans and other socialists take their full entitlement each year. |

A question related to this - what are 'floating holidays'? My husband will get 2 in his new job in addition to PTO and 'holidays'

Re: Holidays and sick days?
On top of vacation days, personal time and sick leave, as a state employee I also have the joy of furlough days (forced unpaid leave) both fixed furlough days on set dates that cannot be negotiated and floating furlough days which can be used almost whenever you want. Yay austerity!

Re: Holidays and sick days?
It all depends on budgets and how much your state is hurting for money since the economic downturn.

Re: Holidays and sick days?
I have the advantage of working for the US office of a British company, so the leave policies are fairly enlightened by US standards.
8 Federal days (New Year, Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving plus the day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) or the nearest weekday if they fall at the weekend. 15 days annual leave 5 floating days 5 "home leave" due to my status as international employee Where we seem unusual is that there is no official sick time off. It's all on discretion. So if you're sick for a couple of days (stomach bug, migraine, bad cold) then just call in and you'll still get paid. If you're going to be sick longer than a couple of weeks, then they'll start fretting about "disability" and you'll probably need a sick note. We're a small enough office that no-one seems to abuse the system (eg regular "stomach bugs" on a Monday morning). There seems to be a genuine balance between being no pressure about being able to be off work if you really are ill and you need to get better (or you'll infect the office with whatever), and on our part, making the effort to come in and work if you can (or log in from home to keep on top of urgent things if you're on the border of "am I ill enough to have to stay off work") |
