Re: Holiday Destinations in the US
Some of my more memorable trips around the US:
New York City - so much to see and do in the big apple. Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon Philadelphia - great for a day or two to see the historical sights and eat some cheesesteak. San Francisco including Alcatraz. Boston - Freedom Trail, Tea Party ship & museum, baseball at Fenway Park. Niagara Falls - cross into Canada for a different view and also trips to Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto. The beaches and towns of eastern Maryland and Delaware e.g. Bethany Beach, MD and Lewes DE. St. Michael's MD is also worth a visit. Lake holidays e.g. Deep Creek (MD) and Lake Anna (VA) I've been to Florida many times and had some great holidays there. I like the beaches on the panhandle and also Clearwater and St. Pete. Also the Florida Keys (e.g. Key West). |

The nice thing about Bar harbor & that Mount Desert Island area is that it stays pleasantly cool all summer long. So you can leave your boiling-hot part of the country behind and enjoy lovely breezy weather--warm/hot in the middle of the day, but chilly at night--with the occasional fog & short-lived drizzling rain.
The husband & I had an August week of tent-camping on MDI a few years back & we always talk about doing it again. It's more like a 6-7 hour drive for us, but well worth it if you can spend some time exploring the island. I definitely recommend it, especially slightly out of season. Take bikes, hiking gear, a head for heights, swimming costumes, and money for popovers. |
Re: Holiday Destinations in the US
I second the mention of all the great parks, especially in California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada along with grand Teton and Yellowstone.
Also want to mention Glacier NP in Montana, a dream of a place at the right time of year. Of course if you want a city holiday then NY, SF and Seattle are always worth some time :) |
Re: Holiday Destinations in the US
Try South Beach, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago (ignore the new reports - you won't be visiting the troubled wards), Buffalo, NY (for Niagara Falls), Philadelphia, Portland or Camden, Maine, Hudson River Valley, Delaware River Valley, Asheville, NC (stunning!) Santa Barbara, Ca, San Diego, Washington, DC (but not in summer). Visit the Civil War battlefields throughout the south land - you'll find many British tourists there, they are very popular with Brits. And buy a guide book or a restaurant guide so you don't end up eating in fast food joints and then bashing the cuisine, lol.

Can I cheat a little? Banff and Jasper NPs. And if you like that kind of thing, Banff's Glacier Skywalk is pretty awesome.
While I'm thinking about glaciers, Sheila and I took a cruise up Alaska's inside passage. Stopped at Glacier Bay NP and watched the glacier calving right in front of us! Thrilling and sad all at the same time. Ian |

Re: Holiday Destinations in the US
I have loved every trip to New York City, great city! I also went to Niagara on the lake, Canada for the first time last October - beautiful.
Other places I loved, Yosemite NP, Rhodes Island, Poconos (lots of waterfalls!). The Finger Lakes near us produce good wine, so lots of wine tours (and Watkins glen if you like auto racing). I haven't been, but I keep being told to go see the Thousand Islands. Also, I spent a weekend in Corning a couple of years ago - the glass museum was great. City breaks, other than NYC - Boston, Minneapolis, Chicago - if you get here, do the architectural boat trip, the buildings in Chicago are way more interesting from a boat and the guides really know the history. An amazing trip in California is to drive down highway 1 from San Fransisco - another great city - to Los Angeles - not my favourite city BUT a little known gem in Los Angeles is the Tar Pit museum - loved it! That road is so wonderful to drive!! I also agree with San Diego and Washington has great museums, if you like those (and an excellent Ethiopian restaurant). History - Williamsburg and Jamestown (also great nature places there, lovely autumn colours and I will never forget The Great Dismal Swamp!!!) |

Oh and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls - best mini golf (although I still want to say Crazy Golf) and reminds me of every tacky seaside town - I am sure there must have been a bingo place there. Although I suppose they went big time as they have the Casino!!! But it was such fun and the view of the falls that side is spectacular!

I know most people recommend the Canada side of Niagara for the "better" view but I also like the NYS side because you can see that frighteningly volatile river up close and personal.
The thing that amazes me is that the large amount of the water in the river is diverted before it reaches the falls, so it isn't the full force of the river going over the lip. I know it will never happen, but it would be great to see all the water go over, just once! I have also seen pictures of when the river was stopped in 1969 and although my OH was only 10 at the time, he can remember vividly being taken to the falls to see no water falling at all! It seems it will happen again, earlier report is it will happen in 2019 - that would be a great time to go visit them! There is also a great photo I saw on some website of the falls completely frozen! |
