Holiday Destinations in the US
 

Hello
I wondering where is the US people have taken trips and holidays that they would recommend or recommend not to go!!!
I will kick it off with Plymouth in MA which we used as a base to visit Boston and Martha's Vineyard, gorgeous little walking town and MV was all l had hoped and more as a Jaws fan!
We are moving out next month and so excited to explore this incredible and diverse country.

We recently drove from Houston, TX all the way up to South Dakota. It was a looooong drive with nothing much to look at until we got there, but worth it because The Blackhills are beautiful. We stayed in Deadwood (fans of the show) and went to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, The Devils Tower and Custer State Park, all well worth visiting.

A previous road trip took us as far as Las Vegas (we think it's a fun place) even if you are not into gambling, the shows, the food, the neon - it's fun to do once at the very least. On the way there we went through Arizona which we thought was very pretty, Sedona was beautiful and I'd go back for longer next time. On the way back we went to The Grand Canyon for the second time, it's still a sight to behold even if it didn't hold the awe of our first visit.

Since you did say US, Hawaii is my favourite destination, we have visited The Big Island, Oahu, Maui and Kauai and they are all wonderful in their own rights. Too many things to do and see to list them all.

On part of our honeymoon, a long long time ago, we travelled The Pacific Coast Highway and would love to do it again, we stopped at lots of places along the way.

I went to a conference in Las Vegas in October and took Sheila with me. LV itself was fine if touristy (although we did see Elton John in concert and went to a Cirque Du Soleil show) but the best part were our 2 day trips using LV as a base. We went to Death Valley, CA and ended up 120 feet or so below sea level. We also went to the western rim of the Grand Canyon and did the SkyWalk out over the canyon wall. I would recommend both trips.

We just seem to prefer smaller places and countryside rather than big cities for any breaks or vacations. If we have to go to or through a bigger city to get to where we want to be, then so be it.

Bryce Canyon NP
Arches NP
Canyonlands NP
Zion NP

All NP's in Utah. Absolutely fantastic places, by far the best NPs I've ever seen - better than Yosemite and Grand Canyon.

Depends what you like doing, how much time you have and the budget.

If you're a 4-5 hour drive away, Bar Harbor and area of Maine is worth a weekend drive, otherwise you'd probably want to spend a bit more time there. A lot of those coastal towns along Rt1 are nice.

Upstate NY is nice for greenstuff and Saratoga Springs, do a superb 4th July fireworks bash.

Western MA, is lovely and great for some low impact hiking and biking. VT/CT also have some great mountain biking.

The drive across PA, over the mountains is rather pretty too.

The Carolina's and parts of the south are on my road trip wish list. Middle parts of the country, a lot of fun towns and random places to see, but much of the driving is rather dull.

Zion NP get's a shout from me. Have been there before with a group of friends. Anyone who's been there who did the Angels Landing walk? Very scary!

The nice thing about Bar harbor & that Mount Desert Island area is that it stays pleasantly cool all summer long. So you can leave your boiling-hot part of the country behind and enjoy lovely breezy weather--warm/hot in the middle of the day, but chilly at night--with the occasional fog & short-lived drizzling rain.

The husband & I had an August week of tent-camping on MDI a few years back & we always talk about doing it again. It's more like a 6-7 hour drive for us, but well worth it if you can spend some time exploring the island.

It's not much of a holiday destination for me any more, but :thumbup: to this. The French Quarter alone is worth the visit, but there's plenty else to see and do (just don't come looking for our Confederate monuments).

Can I cheat a little? Banff and Jasper NPs. And if you like that kind of thing, Banff's Glacier Skywalk is pretty awesome.
