Default Hiring a car in UK on US license with old address

Hey

Greetings from non foggy (for once) San Francisco

I am heading home in 4 weeks for a visit and plan on hiring a car, I plan on using my US license when Im there, but it has my previous address on - California DMV dont issue you a new license when you move within the state.

Do you think this is going to be an issue? My UK photo card license hasn't expired yet, but I believe that technically it is no longer valid as Im not resident in the UK - although we do still own the house at the address on my UK license.

Not sure how long the DMV would take to send me a new license if I paid.

What do you all think is my best option? I know last year when I went home for a visit I showed both licenses, but not sure which one they used.

Thanks

I don't see why this would be an issue.

You have a valid California license - end of story.

I've never had to confirm my US address.

No, I lie, the form they asked me to fill in asked for my US address.

Of course they will ask for your address and you will give it to them.

You don't have to "prove" that it is your address and if they ask why the address on the license is different then you just tell them that you moved.

All that they really care about is getting the authorization for your credit card.

There's nothing 'technical' about it. It ceased to be valid the day you ceased to be a UK resident. Don't use it, use your CA license instead.

Nothing the DVLA says supports that statement.

Nothing on that page supports my statement.

But since that's a page talking about driving in other countries with a GB license, I don't expect it would.

We just got back from the UK/Greece... My husband used his British license to rent a car in both countries, nothing was said.

Whether another country accepts a GB licence or not depends on that country. Most Australian states, for example, allow temporary residents to use a valid overseas licence indefinitely. Of course, most US states do not.

You commented that a GB licence becomes invalid the moment the holder is no longer resident in GB. We've now established that is not necessarily the case and whether the licence can continue to be used depends on the laws of the overseas country/territory.

Perhaps I should have been more specific then (although given the content of the original post, I don't see that it's really necessary).

A UK license ceases to become valid for driving in the UK the day you cease to become a UK resident.

Better?
