Re: Highways/Freeways = Motorways
mozoo, I always use maps as well. Not a fan of GPS, not sure why. I go up to O'Hare a few times a year from the western Chicago 'burbs and just bomb along with the locals. I do find the myriad of billboards distracting, though, and get a tad frustrated at the lack of signs for turn-offs onto major roads, but find it a pretty easy drive.
Not sure I'd call most of Chicagoland "scenic" though...

We've found some really cool towns/villages on our travels just by leaving the highways. We've done the I-94 trip to O'Hare so many times and there's always some sort of construction going on.
Chicagoland may not be "scenic" but I like to see how the other half lives

You must be driving thru northern Indiana-SR20 where I grew up. Actually you'd be surprised at how many accidents there are between Amish buggys and cars.
Actually though, I was refering to highway/country road driving in general being more dangerous- more narrow lanes, semi's and cars crossing the median, etc. Per mile driven, there are many more fatalities on back roads than Interstates.
