Hi there I'm a complete newbie and am looking to move to US but I work in retail for an american company and was wondering if I move to the states with my company, If I don't want to stay with the company after a while can I then get another job or am I tied to them for ever

It's prob a really silly question

First you need to get them to transfer you to their U.S. office as an intra-company transferee using an L-1 visa. You also need them to agree to subsequently sponsor you for a green card once you're in the U.S., which can take a year or two more. If all of this happens then you're free to leave the employer and go on your merry way...

This is how I did it. If there are any other thoughts on this they'll be on their way shortly...

Have you spoken to anyone at work about this yet? You haven't said what you do, but this is only really going to work if you are in a higher management position or have very specialized knowledge within the company.

Now why would you prefer to work for Wal-Mart :eek: in the US rather than ASDA in Brighton... :ohmy:

Have you talked to them about it? I'm assuming that Wal-Mart must have a huge talent base in their managerial ranks in the U.S. so I'm thinking you'd need to hold a fairly key role to make it work. The two L-1 categories are 'international manager' and 'specialist knowledge'. I came through as 'international manager' as I managed a function that spanned both the UK and US offices and had direct reports at both sites.

aye, it's going to be a hard sell, and expensive, and walmart is known for it's superbly crap work practices...

Hehehehe I have just been made a supervisor and am going to be put on next years management training scheme
