Hi
Just thought I would drop in and say hi. I finally made my move from the great white north to Virginia Beach on Saturday.
I have learned one thing already though: my previous notion that living in Virginia would be just like a warm Canada ain't true.

Juliet: I'm actually a Brit. My wife (North Carolina born and raised) and I have spent the last five years in Canada. It's not just the heat...its the 12 lane highways and other craziness I haven't quite got used to yet!

Darn it! Well, welcome anyway
I've visited VA Beach a few times, it's a cool place. The last time I went there though, I left looking like a human/lobster hybrid (I fell asleep on the beach...with no sunblock 
)

Your going to love Virginia Beach... You'll probably be surprised at how many Brits there are in NC (it is in NC isn't it?)

Bridgie: when my Canadian friends asked me where Virginia Beach is, my response was "in Virginia, by the beach." It is right on the border with North Carolina though, which is not an entirely good thing since my inlaws are now very excited about visiting regularly.
My initial impressions of Virginia Beach are mixed. Where we live is very nice, but I can't help but feel as though we're somewhat in a wealthy oasis surrounded by poverty on all sides. Reminds me of Jo'burg.

The other thing I would have a problem with is the very loud military jets flying overhead frequently thanks to the Norfolk military base. That is one thing my husband and I are considering when looking for a place to relocate to... making sure there are no military airbases nearby.
On the up side, you are very near Washington DC which is a very interesting place to visit. I still haven't gotten to see nearly as much as I would like to see there. I barely made it through the art museum this last time I visited. Also, places like NYC and Boston should be very accessible and affordable (affordable meaning you don't have to pay steep airfares) for you to visit given your location.

My big struggle at the moment is furniture. My place is still nearly bare and the reason is that I cannot find anywhere around here that sells anything designed after 1972.
I did find a Scandinavian place, but thought $3,000 for an IKEA-esque coffee table was a bit much; but it did get me thinking about IKEA...and wow, how few of those there are in this country!
If anyone has a furniture store recommendation in the Hampton roads (ish) area, I'd love to hear it.
