HELP NEEDED..A long shot....
 

Hi y'all,

Apologies admin if this is out of place.

This is indeed a long shot but here goes....

my partner and I are heading to IOWA to get married in August so that we can proceed with her visa app to move to the UK. However, we need a witness for our mariagge license app and subsequent ceremony. Does anyone have any friends/relatives or they themselves in IOWA ( near des moines) be willing to help us out? We would be so so greatful!

An odd request i know... thanks in advance!

AFAIK, witnesses can be anyone... even people pulled off the street at random! You don't need to actually know the witness... and I'm pretty sure the witness to the license doesn't have to be the same witness as at the ceremony! Generally, though, when people get married, they get married some place they're familiar with... so why Iowa if neither of you actually know anyone there?

Well, its the nearest place to her home state of Kansas where its legal. We are a same sex couple, Iowa is the nearest where the UK will recognise it for a spousal visa app for her to come to the UK.

I was a professional wedding witness! When I first went out to the Cayman Islands I worked for Airtours as the office manager. One of my duties was to look after the wedding couples and make sure everything went smoothly. I must have witnessed 40 weddings, pretended to eat so much yucky cake but definitely helped out willingly with the sparkly wine! As Ian said - anyone at the venue/office can help out and are used to it doing it..

We got married in a courthouse, and if we hadn't been able to get my sister and my best friend there at the last minute, the courthouse had people in the building that could have been witnesses. If you tell them when you apply for the marriage license that you don't know anyone, they can usually line someone up for you.

We got married in Copenhagen, Denmark, with just one guest....my daughter.
One of the ladies in the office at the City Hall was our second witness.
If you don't find anyone...they'll find someone for you.

When we got married I had booked a photographer , asked him on the day to be the witness and he was more than happy to ! good luck
