Help! Moving to Chicago

Hello all.....I am an American citizen who has lived in the UK for over 30 years, I still have my American passport. My husband is British and we are looking to move over to Chicago to be closer to my family. Is it going to be simple enough for my husband and I to work and live in the US? My brother is going to countersign everything until we can build a credit rating and my husband is already looking at jobs but we really need to know where and how to start the process? Any help would be great, thank you.

Er, your husband needs a visa! It doesn't matter who "countersigns everything", without a visa your husband won't be living and working in the US. Full stop.

The visa your husband needs is an IR-1, and it will take 6-8 months to obtain. The good news ks that you, as the sponsoring US citizen is resident in the UK, you can file the visa application direct to the US consulate in London - filing in the US takes a couple of months longer.

In my experience, US employers have generally no interest in job applications from overseas, so your husband should expect to arrive in the US before he is able to secure employment. Also be aware that for many jobs getting hired after your 50th birthday can be increasingly difficult, and age discrimination appears to be commonplace.

Hey thanks for that. We will definitely get the process started now. Thankfully not quite at the 50 mark yet.

Hi JenGav, welcome to BE.

You might want to take a look at threads in the US Marriage Based Visas forum, and start a thread over there with any questions you have.
